Cycle Training

The Royal Borough has excellent cycle routes with easy to follow direction signs and the best way to get more people cycling, more safely and more often, is through training.

Training helps riders develop cycling skills which in turn increases their confidence and level of enjoyment. We offer a range of cyclist training for all ages and abilities.

All of our instructors are accredited to the National Standards

Instructor Training

Bikeability is here!

bikeability logo

Bikeability is the all new cycling training scheme for the 21st century. It is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

More than 200 pupils successfully took part in piloting Bikeability in autumn of 2006 and Kingston was one of the few local authorities to officially launch this national scheme in the spring of 2007.

Participants are encouraged to achieve three levels, recognising that there is always more to learn and to enjoy on a bike:

Bikeability Level 1 and 2 for Children

cycling school - training in action

These week long cyclist training courses are offered to Year 5 primary school children and above.

It is a combination of theory and tuition covering the Highway Code, bike-handling skills and most importantly on-road training.

These courses are normally run during term times with an additional holiday programme during the spring and summer holidays. We have developed Bikeability Level 3 courses (see below) for pupils who have successfully completed Bikeability Level 2 and expect to train over 1200 students this year.

Family Cyclist Training

family of cyclists

It can take some time for a child (and parents!) to adjust to independent cycling when a child outgrows the safety seat on their parent’s bike. This course improves the cycling skills and confidence of the youngster and equips the parents with the knowledge and abilities to accompany their child effectively on quiet roads.

Family courses are run by request at schools, with the support of volunteer parents.

If you would like a course to take place at your child's school, please ask your Head Teacher to contact the Cyclist Training Co-ordinator on 020 8547 5826 or email cycling@rbk.kingston.gov.uk,.
