Borough Sports Awards 2007

The cream of Kingston’s sporting talent was invited to the 2007 Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames Sports Awards ceremony in the Main Guildhall on Monday 10 December 2007.

The awards were presented by His Worshipful the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Councillor Shiraz Mirza. Councillor Tricia Bamford, Patrick Leeson, the Strategic Director of Learning & Children’s Services and Scott Herbertson the Head of Leisure & Lifelong Learning were also in attendance.

These prestigious awards are the highest accolade given by the Borough to honour its children and young people for their sporting excellence. All children receiving the awards had represented their sport at county level or above and either live or go to school within Kingston.

There were 4 other awards being presented at the ceremony:

The Coach of the Year Award was won by Sarah Silvester for her outstanding contribution to sport within Kingston. She started Kingston Trampoline Academy in December 2005 and has since not only developed the club but also coached some of her gymnasts through to an international level.

The Volunteer of the Year Award was awarded to Anne Burnell. Anne has been a volunteer in sport within Kingston for over 17 years. She was instrumental in the growth of several football clubs as well as promoting girls’ football.

The Jeremy Jellinek award is for a young person who has not only achieved in their sport but also put something back into their community. This award was won by Minesh Desai not only for his fantastic individual achievements in Gymnastics but also for his work to share his experiences with the schools in Kingston.

The Mayor’s Trophy is an award for the ‘unsung hero’ of a sports club who does a huge amount of work to help the smooth running of a club. This was won by Matthew Ellis for his work with Chessington & Hook United. He helps in many aspects of the club from assisting the coach to helping set up for training and matches.

Representatives from the local schools, colleges and sports clubs were also there to support their pupils and members.
