Kingston Council were highly commended at the Legal & General and British Heart Foundation, 'Healthy Employer of the Year 2006', at the special awards ceremony held on Wednesday 13th September 2006, in London.
The ThinkFit! challenge was launched this summer to encourage companies to put in place and increase the level of physical activity of all staff in the workplace and in doing so improve the health of employees-as well as having some fun.
The companies participating in the ThinkFit! challenge then submitted a 1000 word entry to a judging panel outlining how they implemented the ThinkFit! challenge, listing what actions they had taken to promote healthy activity in the workplace as well as details of the actual activity the employees taking part had completed.
The challenge was opened up to 100 companies nationwide and Kingston Council were one of three companies to be highly commended for their efforts. The Sports & Recreation team encouraged over 50 employees to take part in physical activities during their working day who would normally be sat behind their desks. The 10 week programme based at Kingston College involved subsidised leisure activities such as Mind and Body, Pilates, Body Combat and Tennis.
The programme was so successful that another 10 week programme has recently started with new activities such as Badminton and the Gym being introduced.
Diane Buckley, Director of Legal & General's Group Risk business, said, "The Legal and General and British Heart Foundation ThinkFit! challenge is designed to recognise the excellent progress companies and employees are making together to improve fitness. We celebrate the achievemnets of all the companies participating in the ThinkFit! challenge. Legal and General's sponsorship of the British Heart Foundation, ThinkFit! programme, as well as increasing awareness of the benefits of physical activity to employers and employees also provides excellent support to advisers in the Group Risk and Healthcare markets on raising awareness of the benefits of a healthy workforce. By advisers in the corporate market, passing on the valuable information in the ThinkFit! Challenge to their clients, more businesses and staff may benefit from a healthier workplace."
Douglas Rouse, Head of Corporate Partnerships at the British Heart Foundation said, "Proctor & Gamble, as winners of The Legal & General and British Heart Foundation Healthy Employer of the Year Award, is hopefully the first of many companies who have started to recognise the benefits of an ongoing long term programme to improve the health of their employees. There is greater awareness of the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle and it is wonderful that companies and their employees are beginning to work together to make a difference in their working lives - it's not just the responsibility of individuals at home. Proctor & Gamble, as well as the other companies that entered this year's ThinkFit! Challenge are leading the way, as well as raising vital funds for the British Heart Foundation. Congratulations to them all!"
