The former Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Yogan Yoganathan and Paul Sparks Managing Director of Maypole Motors (Team Kingston sponsor) launched the Borough's challange for the 2006 London Youth Games competition in April. After five weekends of preliminary rounds and a lot of preparation more than 200 Kingston kids arrived at Crystal Palace to take part in the finals of Europe’s largest youth sport event on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July.

After a fantastic weekend of sport Kingston managed to finish in the top ten of 20 of the 34 events that the Borough entered. Kingston came away with 4 team medals and 14 individual medals. Special congratulations goes to the trampoline team who secured team Gold and Andrew and Michael Freeman who won Gold and Silver in the individual competition.

Kingston competed in 34 of the 45 events and finished 17th overall with a score of 855 points. The teams were extremely well supported on the day by parents, friends, The Worshipful the Mayor of The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Councillor Mary Reid and Kingston’s sponsor for the event, Maypole Motors.

The mini games for primary school children were held on Thursday 6 July. Commonwealth Gold medallist, Christine Ohurogu opened the event by lighting the Opening Ceremony flame. Kingston fielded 7 teams with representatives from across the borough. Kingston finished in the top ten of 5 of the 7 events with the best performances coming from the mini netball squad who both finished in 3rd position and a member of the mini swimming team who achieved a silver medal. The teams representing Kingston were selected through clubs or through winners of primary school sports competitions held during the summer. All the children involved had a fantastic day out
