Ohuruogu and Fenn were on hand to offer advice and inspiration to talented teenagers from across the city as part of the support offered by Balfour Beatty, which is to sponsor the London Youth Games for the next six years. Youngsters from each of the 32 London boroughs and the City of London were invited to the launch of next year’s London Youth Games by the engineering giants, on hand to announce an investment of £1.7 million to the London Youth Games and local grass roots sport development until 2013.

As a promising teenager Ohuruogu, 23, twice took part in the London Youth Games, and the Newham-born sprinter believes the event provides the perfect stepping stone to future success.

She said: “Competing in the London Youth Games was great fun and a superb experience for me. The scale of the event and the number of youngsters taking part is amazing, and to be part of that feels really special. “I know it played an important part in inspiring me to continue with the sport and work hard to succeed, and I’m sure today’s teenagers will benefit from the experience as much as I did. “This type of investment towards the London Youth Games is great news for the sport and the city. With such strong backing the Games are sure to develop even further, nurturing some of the most promising talent the city has to offer.”

Jonathan Smith, a wheelchair racer aged 15, and Cassy Weitz, a trampolinist aged 13, both enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with Britain’s two track stars.

The London Youth Games is the largest multi-games competition in the city’s sports calendar, attracting over 25,000 young Londoners from all over the city to compete in over 30 different sports, providing them the opportunity to represent their local Borough or school.

Anthony Kendall, chairman, London Youth Games said: “This announcement represents a seminal moment in the history of the London Youth Games, which has at its heart the ethos of involving as many young Londoners as possible in competitive sport. Balfour’s investment will allow us to fulfil our objectives of doubling participation in the London Youth Games by 2012.”

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone added, “I'm proud to once again give my support to the London Youth Games - a unique and key event on London's sporting calendar. The annual £25,000 from my office together with Balfour Beatty's valuable sponsorship agreement demonstrates that winning the right to host, the Games in 2012 is already paying dividends by attracting new corporate support to these key events. Balfour Beatty's and my continued support will enable many more young people across London to take part in these Games, and this has to be welcomed.”
