Kingston gets Active

A successful partnership between Kingston Council, Fulham Football Community Sports Trust and Kingston Volunteer Centre has been awarded £357.000 to deliver a three year programme to develop opportunities for Disabled Athletes, Girls and Women and Volunteering in Sport.

To celebrate this success and formation of Kingston's CSPAN (Community Sport & Physical Activity Network) the projects will be launched on the 17th September 2008 at Fulham Football Club's training ground at Motspur Park to coincide with the handover of the Olympic Torch from the Paralympics in Beijing.

This award was the result of a successful bid to Sport England's Community Investment Fund (CIF). The bid was based on excellent partnership work by the CSPAN. Hilary Garner, Chair of Kingston's CSPAN said; "Girls just wanna ave fun, Good Sports and Positive Minds (the names of the three projects) represent an important investment into the well being of the people of Kingston. This funding is much welcomed with open arms as it will significantly improve access and widen opportunities for all".

Councillor Simon James, Executive Member for Planning and Regeneration said, "Great news for Kingston. These projects will engage with priority groups working with these two key partners - Fulham Community Sports Trust and Kingston Volunteer Centre will develop and deliver sporting opportunities across the borough. This investment will go a long way to securing the future of our potential athletes and volunteers".

Russell Findlay, Head of Fulham's Community Sports Trust said, "Fulham as a club have a strong commitment to our local community and are passionate about the benefits sport can bring to all, so I am delighted that this funding from Sport England will enable us to work with The Royal Borough of Kingston to create new sporting opportunities for young people with a disability and to inspire young women to lead healthy and active lifestyles through sport. This funding forms part of nearly half a million pounds the community sports trust has sourced to support community sport in Kingston, over this and coming years".
