A Directory of Sports, Exercise and Recreational Activities in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames for people aged over 45.
Be Active, Stay Active.
This is the online edition of the Active Living Directory to sports, exercise and recreational activities in the Royal Borough of Kingston, covering New Malden, Old Malden, Surbiton, Chessington and Tolworth (henceforth Kingston).
This Directory aims to give you the information you need about how to get active and stay active in Kingston upon Thames if you are over 45.
It contains information about a wide range of sports, exercise & recreational activities provided by public, private and voluntary sectors across Kingston. These activities have been listed alphabetically for easy reference, with either phone numbers, email addresses, or websites for you to find out more. All of the classes listed welcome over 45s and many also offer special sessions for over 55s. So whatever your age or current level of activity, there should be something in the Directory for you.
The clubs and sessions that are signed up to the Active Living Passport scheme are indicated by an asterisk and highlighted in yellow in the print version of the directory.
It is recommended that if you take 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise at least 3 times a week you will feel the health benefits.
These benefits include having more energy; feeling less stressed; increasing your muscle strength and looking and feeling better. Exercise can also ease the symptoms of existing conditions such as lung disease, arthritis and depression. Further health benefits for older people include protection against heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes and some forms of cancer, as well as making everyday tasks easier, reducing the risk of falling, and maintaining your independence.
We recommend that if you have any health problems you seek your doctor’s advice before starting any new exercise programme. If you have any injuries, operations or new medications please inform your doctor or class instructor before returning to exercise. Should you feel dizzy or nauseous while exercising, stop and tell your instructor or group leader. If you have fallen or are afraid of falling, contact your GP who may refer you to the falls service for assessment.
If embarrassment, fear, lack of motivation or support is preventing you from taking the first steps to a healthier more active life, then try an activity which you enjoy, where support can be found from other like-minded people or supportive, experienced staff.
Remember to make realistic goals for your activity, start at your own pace and increase gradually. Try walking or cycling more, getting off the bus earlier; taking the stairs not the lift; and even getting more active with the housework, gardening or children.
The directory is also available in hard copy, large print and as an audiotape. Please contact the Active Living Team if you would like a copy in one of these formats. In addition, it is available in print format for you to download and print out (see Related Documents below).
