Magic Space

Shaan Butters signs copies of her new book on the history of Kingston Museum
The Friends of Kingston Museum have just published a new history of the Museum, by respected local historian, Shaan Butters. The research was undertaken to mark the Museum’s centenary in 1904 and the local firm of Russell-Cooke Solicitors has largely funded the publication.
Shaan Butters has written a number of well-loved books on the area including her authoritative Book of Kingston and the Friends and supporters were delighted when she agreed to write the museum history for its centenary year, collaborating with Local History Officer, Emma Rummins in finally bringing it to press in 2006.
In opening the museum in 1904 Lord Rosebery (High Steward of Kingston and later Prime Minister) said that Kingston Council wanted the museum to be ‘of ever increasing service and delight to the people of this town’.
‘A museum is a magic space’, writes Shaan. ‘A local museum like Kingston’s does not only put us in touch with our predecessors and the community they built for us, but continues to celebrate the place that Kingston has become today.
This well illustrated book is available price £12 from Kingston Museum, Wheatfield Way, Kingston upon Thames KT1 2PS or Kingston Local History Room, North Kingston Centre, Richmond Road, Kingston upon Thames KT2 5PE.
