Kingston's Citizens Archive Pack

Kingston Museum & Heritage Service has been successful in its application for a grant to develop resources for history/citizenship studies in schools and colleges. The Service will be using its considerable archive sources, which span over 900 years, to present a 'pack' of resource material via Kingsnet, the web site for Borough Schools, the London Grid for Learning and the Internet.

Worth just under £500 the grant will be spent on digitising around 30 historical documents related to crime and punishment, trade, the treatment of the poor and disadvantaged, religious issues and local government.  These can be used to stimulate discussion and comparison with current issues.  The project is aimed at young people in secondary schools and higher education but will have a much wider appeal for all those interested in Kingston's history and in the topics discussed in the pack.

Celebrating Archives

The project will be launched during Archives Awareness Month in September 2003.  Co-ordinated nationally by the National Council for Archives and Libraries, the month will be a celebration of the range and wealth of archives in the UK and their ability to touch people's lives.

For more information about the project contact Howard Benge on 020 8547 6754 or email: howard.benge@rbk.kingston.gov.uk.
