The category "slides" consists of over 2000 images on glass. Most of these are Magic Lantern slides, the standard means of illustrating lectures during the 19th century up to the 1930s. Most slides are nominally 3.25 inches square (English Format) or 3.25 by 4 inches (American Format). Slides usually consist of two pieces of glass bound together with gummed paper strips with the photographic emulsion protected by being on the inside. Some appear not to have been bound with a cover glass for projection and are consequently listed as "unmounted". Others have evidently had their cover glass removed at some point and are listed as "disbound".
