These pots was made in Kingston but found in London. They are on loan from the Museum of London. The pottery industry in Kingston was at its peak in the 13th and 14th centuries. Evidence of kilns has been found in Eden Street in the vicinity of the Primark store, formerly Alders. The Industry supplied the London Market including the Royal Household.
The clay used for these 14th century pots came from elsewhere in Surrey. It fired a creamy colour hence its name: 'Surrey Whiteware'. The pots were given a distinctive lead glaze which, with the addition of copper, fired green. When you visit the Museum look for a reconstruction of a medieval kiln. Can you spot the human head on one of the pots?
