This special pewter dish was used in Kingston at celebrations to mark the Coronation of King George IV in 1821. It held a huge piece of beef, called a Baron of beef, that was served to 700 schoolchildren in Kingston Market Place. The Royal pewter maker, Thomas Alderson, made the dish.
The dish was purchased in 1998 with contributions from the National Art Collections Fund, the Museums & Galleries/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Museum Friends and other local donors.
