Henry Male

Henry Male was born in Worcestershire, but came to Kingston as an apprentice blacksmith in 1649. He issued his tokens in 1658 when still a young man.  He purchased property in 1663 in Cook's Row on the east side of the Market Place. It must have been a considerable property as it cost him £151.  In 1700 he bought more land behind it.

As an ironmonger he produced a variety of iron objects and some of his business was with the parish church providing iron nails, wire and ironwork.  References to this work can be found in the churchwardens' accounts in our archives.  Male held a number of official positions within the town including constable, aleconner, poor warden and bailiff.

Children's activity:

Henry Male sold a whole variety of things including shoe buckles.  His token shows the coat of arms of the Ironmongers who included blacksmiths.  Goods for sale: a pair of shoe buckles for 8 farthing tokens.
