Traders' Tokens - Children's Activity 1

Can you Afford Cromwell's Party?

You live in Kingston in the year 1655 and have been invited to Oliver Cromwell's party at Hampton Court Palace, just across Kingston Bridge.  It is a very special party as Oliver Cromwell is the most important person in England.

A drawing of people from the Seventeenth Century

You will have to buy a few things before you go but you only have 40 farthing traders' tokens to spend in Kingston Market Place.  You will need

  • A pair of new shoes

  • A pair of polished shoe buckles

  • A new doublet (that's a small coat)

  • A barrel of beer to take to the party

What you have to do is click on each of the traders' names below.  Look for the words Goods for Sale and find out who is selling the goods you want and how much you have to pay.  We've done the first one for you.

  1. Where will you get a pair of buckles?
Answer: from Henry Male who is a blacksmith.  It costs 8 farthing tokens.

  2. Where will you get a pair of new shoes?

  3. Where will you get wool for a new doublet?

  4. Where will you get a barrel of beer?

Click on a name to find out about each trader and their tokens.
