European Computer Driving Licence: Information for Candidates

Test Centres

The Hook Centre, Tolworth Community Library, Surbiton Library and New Malden Library are all approved testing centres for ECDL. ECDL Advanced is also available at the Hook Centre. ECDL is administered in the UK via the British Computer Society (BCS). The Centre Manager is Alex Webb.

Registration

You need to register before taking your first test. You can register at any Test Centre. You will need a photo proof of identity (e.g. passport or driving licence). If you do not have a photographic form of identity you will need two proofs of identity such as a utility bill, or bank statement. A virtual logbook is created when your details are sent to BCS.

Logbooks

The logbook costs £30. When you pass a module test, your virtual logbook is updated with details of the test and test date. When you have passed all the tests, the BCS issues your certificate which you will need to come in to collect and sign for.

Tests

There are seven modules which make up ECDL. Contact the test centre in advance to schedule a date and time. Tests currently cost £14 and the time allowed for each is 45 minutes. If you have a disability or language problem you may request extra time. You can discuss this with a test centre representative at a Test Centre.

Modules

The modules are as follows:

  1. Security for IT users
  2. IT user fundamentals
  3. Word processing
  4. Spreadsheets
  5. Database
  6. Presentation
  7. Information and Communication

Test procedures

When you come in for a test you should bring the test fee plus proof of identity. If you registered at a different Test Centre, we need to have details before you come for a test. You can not use books during the test. Mobile phones must be switched off. All test materials are confidential and can not be taken away. The pass mark is 75% for each test, tests are marked at the Test Centre and results are normally available within 24 hours.

Appeals

If you failed, but you think that you should have passed a test, you can appeal. Details of the appeals procedure are available on request. However, all close results are always double-marked as a matter of course, by two different markers.
