Elsie and Mairi go to War: two extraordinary women on the Western Front.

Author Diane Atkinson will be talking about her new book charting the lives of two extraordinary women, Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm, who in 1914 headed off to the Belgian front as ambulance drivers, risking their own lives to establish a first aid post in the village of Pervyse, near Ypres. Their courage and expertise led them to being hailed as the “Angels of Pervyse” as they worked under constant gunfire and bombardment.
Free event at Kingston Library, Thursday 30 July, 7.00 to 8.00pm.

Quest Seekers

Dare you take up the challenge of reading or listening to 6 books this summer? If you do then join ‘Quest Seekers’, Kingston Libraries annual summer reading challenge, starting on Saturday 4 July. There are rewards for each book you read or listen to and some great prizes, such as an iPod Nano for the over 12’s category, an iPod Shuffle for the 8-11 year old category and vouchers from The Chelsea Building Society for all ages. New Malden Library

New Malden Library will be closed for approximately 2 weeks from the 13 July for modifications to the library counter, the installation of self service equipment and associated works. All other libraries in the borough will be open as usual throughout the closure - library members can use any of the other branches to borrow or return books or to use other library services. Kingston Library and Heritage Service apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.

Twilight Night

The Rose Theatre is holding a Twilight Night on Wednesday 8 July as part of the International Youth Festival, and is looking for young people to participate in this event. If you can act, sing, design clothes or merchandise, write, make films or take photos based on the Twilight books by Stephenie Meyer we’d like to hear from you. Would you like to perform in front of other Twilight fans or have your work put on display for them to see? Take a look at the categories on the poster below to get some ideas.

EBay workshops at the Hook Centre

Two courses taught by a specially trained EBay tutor suitable for anyone wishing to find out how to buy or sell goods online. Details on the poster at the bottom of this page.

Astronomy Evening at Kingston Library

Thursday 22 October 6pm to 7pm. "Our solar system" with Neville Grabaskey, Education Officer, Ewell Astronomical Society. FREE tickets available from 1 October at Kingston Library. Limited places.

Online Reference Room News

Ancestry UK is now available on all public access computers in all Kingston Library branches, and also at the Local History Room, North Kingston Centre. This essential resource can only be accessed from public access computers. It cannot be accessed from home computers using "My Account" due to licensing restrictions.

The BFI Screen Online Archive is now accessible from within all library branches. This archive is not accessible from home.
NewsUK now includes online access to a wide range of magazines. All newspapers and magazines are regularly updated. See the content list in NewsUK for details of titles.

Through Kingston Libraries you can access a wide range of learning opportunities. Ask at any branch library for advice and guidance to help you find the course or way of learning that is right for you.
Providing British Computer Society accredited IT courses since 1999, Kingston Libraries have developed a strong commitment to high quality ICT training. If you want to learn how to use the internet, e-mail friends and family around the world, apply for jobs online, improve your CV or get to grips with Office IT skills why not attend a course at one of Kingston Libraries learning centres?

Recycle your books, DVDs, CDs and pre-recorded videos at one of our book banks and support the British Heart Foundation

Surbiton and Old Malden branches have book banks outside their buildings where you can deposit your unwanted books, DVDs, CDs or videos in whatever condition. At Surbiton Library the book bank is located in the car park at the rear of the library. The British Heart Foundation collect from the banks once a week and will transform your donation into much needed funds for their charity.
