Here is a snapshot of what's on in the arts during the next few weeks

Don't miss this fantastic music and dance extravaganza brought to Kingston by Adma Newport (pictured right), one of the stars of the Brazilian music scene in London and in Latin America. Starring special guests, Nu Tempo Contemporary Dance Company and the distinguished Brazilian actor Natan Barreto, this specially programmed Black History Month event will give a taste of what carnival is really like in Bahia.
The historic city of Salvador, with its distinctive African roots, is the capital of Bahia - a state in the north east of the country on the Atlantic coast. Renowned for its extraordinary carnival tradition, Adma and The Afoxés embody the unique musical heritage of their native Bahia - fusing the enticing Brazilian dance rhythms with west African music and jazz influences. Come along and experience the irresistable and distinctive African soul of Brazil.
Kingston Early Music Festival is still something of an undiscovered gem in the music calendar. If music be the food of love, Will Summers, with his passion and knowledge for Early Music and his exquisite arrangements, would take centre stage.
This is the second concert in the Early Music Festival. Here a concert of 18th century songs, cantatas and sonatas will be given by young music graduates in the intimate surroundings of the Lovekyn Chapel. The third concert will take place on Thursday 13 November when Will Summers and Stephen Carpenter will perform Renaissance songs, madrigals and dances for lute and flute. Come and experience sublime music in a beautiful setting. Tickets available on the door £8, £6, free for under 16s.

Think in Kingston audiences will remember a thought-provoking event on free speech organised with the Institute of Ideas earlier this year. During October the IoI will be running various satellite events that capture the youthful, intellectual buzz of the capital in the lead up to the main Battle of Ideas Festival on 1 and 2 November 2008. The two day festival programme, which is held at The Royal College of Art, brings together some 250 speakers from the arts, business, science and academia to debate core issues of the day. If this event has not yet appeared on your radar – it is well worth checking out.

Following the success of the first Tea Dance, the Rose Theatre has launched the Culture Café - a place where cake and culture go hand in hand! During the next few weeks visitors to the cafe will be treated to free events ranging from philosophical discussions and art exhibitions to dance and jazz performances.
The varied Autumn programme at the Rose includes Peter Nicholl’s brilliantly quirky comedy, Born in the Gardens, directed by Stephen Unwin and Rose’s first home-grown production Love’s Labours Lost, directed by Peter Hall. To coincide with this production The Language of Love Festival will feature workshops for children, readings of Shakespeare’s sonnets and the opportunity for the public to join in rehearsed readings of The Comedy of Errors and Two Gentlemen of Verona.
