Kingston Hospital Trust - Application for Foundation Trust Status

Kingston Hospital NHS Trust launched a 12 week public consultation on 24 June on their plans to become an NHS Foundation Trust.

Kingston Hospital NHS Trust are asking for the views of patients, staff and local residents on how the foundation trust should be set up, and who will be invited to become members and governors.

The consultation period started on Wednesday 24 June 2009 and ends on Wednesday 16 September 2009.

A Foundation Trust is still part of the NHS, but local people and patients will be able to have more say in the shape of the services provided by a Foundation Trust in the future.

In summary, Foundation Trusts are:

  • Still part of the NHS
  • Free and are not run for profit
  • Expected to keep to NHS standards and meet performance targets
  • Inspected regularly

If Kingston Hospital become a Foundation Trust it will:

  • Give our local communities a way of influencing what happens in the Trust and the way we develop in the future
  • Give Kingston Hospital greater freedom over what we do locally and how we do it
  • Give Kingston Hospital freedom to borrow money to invest in developments, change the way we do things and make services better, quicker and with more choice for local people

To become a Foundation Trust, there is a rigorous authorisation process. If it is successful, Kingston Hospital will become a Foundation Trust in 2010.

Consultation on new trauma and stroke services for London

Healthcare for London, working on behalf of London’s primary care trusts (PCTs), is planning to introduce world-class specialist stroke centres and major trauma networks across the capital. Currently, the standard of care varies considerably across the capital. These plans will save lives and significantly reduce disability.

Healthcare for London is proposing the creation of trauma networks based around new major trauma centres, which will improve every trauma centre in A&Es across London.

New specialist acute (urgent) stroke services will give all stroke patients direct access to expert care and treatment, within a 30 minute ambulance journey.

St George's Hospital is proposed as the major centre for both acute stroke and major trauma for South West London. Kingston Hospital would form part of the trauma network.

The public consultation took place for 14 weeks and closed on 8 May 2009.

As part of the consultation, a Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee of all the London Boroughs was formed to look at the proposals in detail.

The final report and response of the Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee can be found at the bottom of this page.
