Adult Social Care

Carer and Patient

Can we help you?

Our job is to support older and disabled adults who live in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to keep their independence, stay safe and enjoy a reasonable quality of life.  We may be able to offer you support if:

  • You are an older person and frail
  • You are physically disabled or ill
  • You have a sight or hearing impairment
  • You have a mental illness, making it difficult for you to cope with everyday life
  • You need support because of a learning disability
  • You have problems with drugs or alcohol
  • You are living with HIV
  • You need help to look after a family member or friend
  • You need to stay safe and free from harm.

Getting Support

We will need to talk to you about your care and support needs. This is called an assessment. We only provide support to people who have or are soon likely to have 'Critical' or 'Substantial' needs. These needs include situations where:

  • You are being abused or likely to be abused or neglected
  • Your health is poor resulting in the need for medical care
  • You cannot manage your own personal care
  • You cannot make important decisions for yourself
  • Your work or education is or is likely to be disrupted
  • The people who support you can no longer care for you
  • You cannot carry out normal parenting or family responsibilities

Our Adult Social Care Guide tells you more about our services and how we decide who we help:

Service Improvements

There have been some important improvements happening in Adult Social Care from 2 March 2011.

We’re moving away from doing things for people, to supporting people to do more for themselves and so be more in charge of their lives.

Why have we improved?

We have improved the way we offer our services and support so that you:

  • are at the centre of everything we do
  • get good information and advice to make choices about the help you need
  • have a better experience of getting the right support when you need it

Our Vision

We want to make it easier for you to get the support you need quickly and in a way that works well for you.

Whatever the support you need, we want to make sure you have as much choice and control as you need to live your life your way.

How have we improved?

The new services are made up of teams who will support older people, and people with a physical or sensory impairment. These teams will consist of trained professionals who will continue to deliver high quality services.

We have set up 4 new services to fit our new vision for social care in Kingston.  These are:

What's New

  • Customer Contact Service
  • Short Term Service
  • Medium Term Service
  • Long Term Service

What's Staying the same

  • Learning Disability Service
  • Mental Health Services

To find out more about the improvements, please see the leaflet below:

We will continue to offer people Personal Budgets to those who are eligible (find out more by reading the leaflet at the bottom of the page), as part of the Long Term Services. We also offer 'reablement' services to people who need to regain their independence at home, as part of the medium term service.

Day services consulltation

At at a meeting on 1st March, the Council said it wanted to make changes to day services for people with learning disabilities and day services for people with physical disabilities.

These changes are about making sure people have more choice and control over their services and support.
