Social Care Strategy

Our overall Social Care Strategy covers all our services to adults and sets out what we aim to achieve from 2008 to 2013 to make sure we support vulnerable people to lead full, independent and active lives.

This Strategy was agreed for wider consultation by the Council's Executive Committee at its meeting on 8 April 2008 (See below under 'Also see').

More detailed strategies covering Older People's Services, Physical Disability, Sensory Impairment and HIV Services, Carers' Services, Learning Disability Services,  Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Mental Health Social Care Services are also available (See below under 'Also see').

Key elements of our Strategy

The overall Strategy identifies eight important targets we want to achieve:

  1. Targeting services and support on the most vulnerable people
  2. Prevention, rehabilitation and recovery
  3. Using resources and value for money
  4. Integration, seamlessness and partnership
  5. Independence, autonomy and personalisation
  6. Safeguarding vulnerable adults
  7. Dignity, respect and equalities
  8. Engagement and co-production

What you said about our Strategy

We held eight public meetings from 7th May to 8th July to give people a chance to have their say about our Strategy.

People were very positive about what we were trying to achieve but there were some questions and concerns about how we were going to achieve our aims (See below under 'Also see' for a summary of the consultation feedback).

The main themes arising from the consultation were:

Information and advice – making sure people have easy access to user-friendly and comprehensive information about local services that can help them keep independent, safe and well or support them when they are unwell, at risk of harm or need a lot of help to stay independent.

Review, evaluation and involvement  – making sure services, resources and the way we do things work to the benefit of the local community. This quality assurance/ performance management process should actively involve the people who use services and the local community.

Inclusive partnership working – making sure all organisations and groups work well together to make it easy for people to access support, particularly hard to reach groups.

Next steps

Now that our overall Strategy and the individual service area strategies have been approved by the Executive Committee at its meeting on 30 September 2008, we can begin the work of putting them all into practice.
