Local group that aims to increase the understanding and awareness of children with special needs in the Kingston area. Runs events, provides information, support and advice on any and all special needs.

They aim to:

  1. Encourage a better, more rapid and more effective communication between parents and carers and the Agencies within Kingston upon Thames.
  2. Provide a forum for discussion on policy and other potential areas of co-operation.
  3. Promote actively a "multi-disciplinary approach" between parents/carers, education and leisure, health, community services and the voluntary sector.
  4. Enable parents and carers to make informed decisions about the lives of their children.

MAPS (A Support Group for Parents of Children with Special Needs)

Maps Partnership has now been running for over 2 years and in that time they have seen their membership and involvement within local community projects grow.

They have 5 committee members who meet up on a monthly basis to organise speakers, share information and liaise with other groups. The aim of the group is to meet, socialise, network and share information.

This last year has been really busy for MAPS Partnership and the committee are really pleased that due to an initial discussion with Kingston Sports and Recreation, a meeting with MAPS and SWAPS resulted in the Sports Taster Days for children with special needs.

MAPS has also been instrumental in the setting up of Kingston Libraries Story time for children with special needs at New Malden Library and the organisation of a special needs book collection hopefully to commence later this year.

The group meets at Warren Park at 8pm to 10.30pm and have guest speakers who come and talk on a variety of subjects. Light refreshments are always available but donations of any snacks/drinks are welcome. If for any reason speakers are unable to attend at the last minute then the group endeavours to organise a speaker who can come at short notice, if not they will still meet and use the time for socialising and information swapping.

In between these dates they group also regularly organises ladies and gentlemen's nights out and welcomes new members.

SWAPS is the Kingston Branch of the National Autistic Society and welcomes parents of children who are on the autistic spectrum to monthly meetings at Warren Park Children's Centre on the second Tuesday of each month at 8pm. Meetings cover a range of issues, sometimes with a guest speaker or video of particular interest. In addition families are welcome to join fortnightly sessions at Warren Park on Sunday afternoons from 3pm to 5pm where children can play in safety and parents and carers can have a cup of tea and chat.
