Benefits - Disabled Children

This is a list of some of the benefits that your child or you may be entitled to and other information on benefits.

If you think you may be entitled to a benefit, the most important point is to put in a claim, in writing. Most claims will not be backdated more than a few weeks without good cause and 'not knowing' is not seen as a good cause! If you establish entitlement, the allowance will commence from the date you first claimed.

The Disabled Children's Information and Advice Service offers support and guidance around benefits for children and young people with disabilities and their carers.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

Disability Living Allowance is not income or savings related and is payable every four weeks to a child with care and mobility needs. There are two parts and either or both can be claimed depending on the extent of the disability. The Care Component (child must be over 3 months ) is payable at one of three rates, and the Mobility Component (child must be over 3 years old) is payable at one of two rates.

Carer Allowance (Previously known as invalid care allowance)

This is a weekly cash allowance linked to Disability Living Allowance. A parent/carer that spends at least 35 hrs. a week looking after a child awarded the higher or middle rate DLA Care Component may claim this allowance subject to earnings.

Full details and an application form can be found in the leaflet DS700 available from your local Post Office or Benefits Agency or telephone 0800 882 200

Income Support

  • If you are entitled to income support and receive DLA or ICA, you may also be entitled to Carers Premium.
  • If you are on income support and receive DLA or other free benefits such as travel costs to hospital you may be entitled to Disabled Child's Premium.
  • If you are on income support, you may be entitled to help from the Social Fund (ask at the Benefits Agency).
