Fostering in Kingston Video Transcript

Male: Foster carers can come from all walks of life and all backgrounds. Whatever your race, whatever your sexuality, and whatever your gender.

Female 1:You don’t have to be married – for example, I’m single -  but if you are in a relationship, you have to be in a stable relationship.

Male:The qualities it takes, really, to be a good foster carer: you’ve got to be flexible, non-judgemental; you’ve got to be calm in a crisis, considering that you’re dealing with children from all different backgrounds, and ,er, whatever they have…. You’ve got to be a good listener as well. It’s really important to be a good listener.

Female 2: It’s important as well, um, for the children to, like, feel comfortable, and you’re comfortable with them as well.

Female 1:You do have to like children and to be able to get on with adults.

Female 2:It’s also important to, um, help the children with their homework, their education, and also to liaise with the teachers.

Male: Yeah, because we find that if you show interest, they actually do better at school, don’t they?

Female 2: Yeah

Female 1: You have to make it possible for them to follow cultural and religious practices, even if they are different to your own.

Female 2:We foster because we’re part of a professional team and we’re respected for what we do.

Female 1: I get a real sense of achievement from helping a child out in a difficult time.
