Blocked Gullies

We are responsible for the maintenance of roadside surface water drains normally situated in the kerbside channel or gutter on highways.  Our responsibility to keep the gullies clear allows water to run away freely.  The gully consists of a grating on top of the gully pot leading to the pipe which conducts the water into the surface water main sewer.

The main sewer is the responsibility of Thames Water.

Drainage from private houses and on private land (including incoming service, waste/surface water and foul) are the responsibility of the house owner or Thames Water.

Drainage from Council Housing property should in the first instance be reported to the Estate Manager.

Our contractor does a scheduled cleanse of all the Council gullies by neighbourhood once per annum, and those on classified roads twice.  There is also responsive gully cleanse of any gullies reported as blocked by residents or council inspectors.

Where possible all gullies will be cleared at first by digging out, jetting, etc.  If unblocking by this method proves impossible, e.g. broken grating, tree roots, broken pipe, blocked main, the matter will be referred to the relevant agency, e.g. highway maintenance, Thames Water or a specialist outside contractor for further works.
