Recycling Centre Site Layout

The Recycling Centre (Tip) Site Layout was changed towards the end of 2007 to make recycling easier and improve traffic flow.

There is a three lane system with height barriers in place.

  • Lane one:  only accessible on Saturday afternoon and Sunday and can be used to tip household waste, garden waste scrap metal, fridges and freezers, and up to 1 bag of rubble, as well as all other recycling
  • Lane two:  and can be used to dispose of household waste and recycle garden waste, scrap metal, fridges and freezers, and up to 1 bag of rubble, as well as all other recycling
  • Lane three:  household recycling banks only; if you do not need to dispose of any of the items above use this lane to avoid extra queuing times

CA site lanes signs

  • Drivers of vehicles over 1.8metres (6ft) in height must report to the site staff. You will be given a high visibility jacket and be instructed in how to use the tipping shed. Access to the recycling facilities is available before you enter the shed. Please ensure you return the jacket before leaving the site.
  • Trade vehicles will be directed across the weighbridge and will be charged for what they tip.
  • Commercial vans and vehicles will be directed across the weigh bridge. A member of staff will decide whether the load is of a commercial or private nature. If the load is deemed commercial there will be a charge for disposal. Charges are based on weight.
  • There are restrictions in place on the amount of rubble and hardcore you can dispose of at this site. Please report to a member of the site staff if you have more than 25kg (approximately one bag) of rubble or hardcore. You will be charged for its disposal.

Top Tips on using the Refuse and Recycling Site

  • Always follow the direction given by the signs and site staff
  • If you are tipping general waste as well as recycling, pack recyclables into your vehicle before general waste (there is no access to the recycling facilities before the general waste tipping point).
  • If you are only using the recycling facilities, use lane 3 and beat the traffic!
  • The tipping shed is very busy during weekdays and on Saturday mornings. If you have a vehicle over 1.8 metres (6ft) in height, please be aware that you may encounter delays at these times. Where possible, make your visits on Saturday afternoon or Sunday
  • Vehicles needing to cross the weighbridge will be able to access the tipping facilities when the bridge is open. At other times they will be refused access and asked to return at an appropriate time. The weighbridge is open from 7.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and from 7.30am to 12 noon on Saturday.
  • Look at the 'Tip Cam' to avoid long queues of traffic (the links are at the bottom of the page).
  • If you own a vehicle over 1.8 metres (6ft) in height, you can still tip household waste at the site. You will be directed by staff to the tipping shed via the recycling facilities, so make sure you load your vehicle with household waste first, then recyclables.

Why was the Site Layout Changed?

Between the financial years 2005/06 and 2006/07 household waste collected at the Villiers Road Recycling Centre site increased by 31%. This trend must be reversed.  We face fines of £150 per tonne for quantities of waste in excess of landfill targets set by central government. It is vital that the amount of household waste accepted by the CA site is reduced and that recycling is made easier.

The current site layout improves traffic flow and make it easier for residents wanting to use the recycling facilities only.
