Why we are changing your waste collections
From Friday 2 March 2007 the Council has been trialling a new waste collection service in your area.
Caring for our environment is increasingly important to the Council and many residents. One of Kingston Council’s strategic aims is to have an environmentally conscious community and be a sustainable borough. That is why Kingston Council is introducing a new way of collecting your household waste. Along with other Councils across England we can no longer simply collect your waste and rely on being able to bury it in landfill sites some distance from the Borough; it is expensive, produces gases that contribute to global warming and it is harmful to the environment.
Kingston Council is changing its refuse and recycling collections across the whole Borough from September 2008 and therefore the information provided by the trial will be invaluable for the preparation of this change.
The Council cannot secure the improvements in environmental care that we want without your support; we hope these changes will encourage you to play your part in enhancing Kingston’s environmental performance.
Below are key points of information about the trial. You can also find a guide to your waste containers, collection details information and Frequently Asked Questions from the menu on the left.
A map of the trial area can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.
Key points of information are set out below
- You should have received a detailed information pack setting out details of the changes to your service before the new scheme was launched. This pack explains exactly what materials can go in each container and other important details about the service changes.
If you did not receive an information pack, have moved to the area since the launch of the scheme, or would like another information pack for any other reason, please contact Customer Care via email environment@rbk.kingston.gov.uk or call 020 8547 5560.
- Your recycling collection in the green box(es) is on a weekly basis, every Friday.
- The scheme includes weekly cardboard collections in a specially designed bag, every Friday.
- The scheme includes a weekly organic waste collection service for all food waste including meat and plate scrapings, using two containers.
The small one is for use in your kitchen; the second larger container is kept outside and holds the kitchen waste securely.
- All other (non-recyclable) refuse is collected on a fortnightly basis every alternate Friday from your wheeled bin.
- Your wheeled bin is ‘chipped’ by placing a single microchip in the bin.
The purpose is simply to record whether or not the bin has been placed out and emptied; no personal data is recorded and the bin is not weighed.
- If you have five or more people living in your house you can request a larger wheeled bin.
To request a larger bin you can download a form at the bottom of this page or call Customer Care on 020 8547 5560 and they will send a form to you.
- Should you feel you are unable to move your container to the kerbside, due to age or infirmity, please contact Customer Care on 020 8547 5560.
