On the 26th July 2005 the Council resolved to adopt the 'Shopfront and Shopsign Design Guide' Supplementary Planning Document.
The guide:
- Provides a diagrammatic explanation of when planning permission and Advert Consent is needed;
- Details the elements of the architectural framework, and the shopfront, which need to be considered in the development of designs.
- Outlines the recommended design process giving guidance on Design, Access and Sustainability Statements, and updated in light of the Disability Discrimination Act;
- Highlights current access requirements, and sets out council policies for specific elements.
- Looks at a series of elements such as blinds, projecting signs and security shutters.
- Outlines the Council’s position in relation to A boards.
- Extends the principles designed specifically for Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings to all historic buildings and their setting, including Listed Buildings, Buildings of Townscape Merit and adjoining Conservation Areas;
- Moves away from internally illuminated fascia signs and away from spot and swan neck lamps;
- Contains a new principle to resist the removal of entire shopfronts;
- Contains two new principles on folding or concertina shopfronts (for historic buildings)
- Encourages non-illuminated projecting signs, reducing bulk;
- Moves away from illuminated projecting signs on historic buildings.
