Giving an answer to whether you need planning permission or not is not always straightforward. Planning permission is usually required for carrying out any form of ‘development’ and this includes the use of land and buildings as well as the construction of or alteration / addition to buildings.
You will require consent from the Council for works that alter, extend or would result in the demolition of part of a building of special or architectural interest – a ‘listed building’.
Consent is also required for demolition of buildings in a Conservation Area and if you wish to fell or carry out work to a tree in a Conservation Area you must notify the Council at least 6 weeks before you propose to carry out the work. We will then assess what is proposed and respond to your request.
Display of many signs and advertisements will require consent form the Council as will work affecting trees that are covered by a Tree Preservation Order.

Many small-scale household operations, for example small extensions to a house, installation of fences/gates, may not need planning permission. These are known as ‘permitted development’. A guide explaining household permitted development rights is available from the Development Control Team. Email: dc@rbk.kingston.gov.uk
