We receive allegations about possible breaches of planning control from various sources including the public, Councillors and Council staff.
If you wish to report a suspected breach you must submit your allegation in writing. They can be received in any form including letter, email, fax, or via our electronic form. You need to give us some basic information, including what you think is wrong, where this is happening and, if appropriate, when.
We do not guarantee to progress anonymous allegations, so you are urged to include your name and contact details. If you do so we can also keep you informed of the progress of the investigation. All reports received are treated in confidence and your name and details will not be given to the person about whom you are making the allegation. However, please remember that the very nature of some breaches mean that it is sometime obvious who has reported the breach. The only stage at which the Council makes a complainant's identity known is if an enforcement notice becomes the subject of a public hearing and the complainant is required to give evidence, but this is very rare. Details of who to contact are given at the end of this page.
Each complaint is allocated to a case officer to investigate the matter. This usually starts with a visit to the site to confirm what is happening and an assessment is made of whether a breach of planning control is involved. The nature of allegations is very diverse, so the procedure that will follow on may vary.
