Do I Need Planning Permission to Install a Satellite Dish or Antenna?

Houses, Bungalows, Flats and Maisonettes

You do not normally require planning permission to install a satellite dish or aerial on your property, but whether you do or not depends on the size and location of the antenna and how many are already on the building.

If you live in a flat or maisonette, these limits refer to the building as a whole and not to each separate flat. If the number of dishes or antennas installed on the building has already reached the maximum allowed, you will need planning permission for further installations.

You may also need permission from your freeholder before you can install any sort of antenna If you live in a council property the Housing Department will not give you permission to install an antenna unless you have first obtained either a certificate of lawfulness or planning permission from the planning department.

You can found out whether permission is required by following the link below to the Planning Portal’s interactive Antenna Guide. This guide will ask you a series of questions and at the end determine whether you will need planning permission for what you want to do.
