Infectious diseases and food poisoning

The council’s job is to prevent the spread of food borne illness within the borough and to try and establish possible causes.  Types of illnesses dealt with include Salmonella, Campylobacter and general food poisoning.  Many different sorts of bacteria (germs) can cause food borne illness. If food is kept warm, bacteria can grow rapidly and reach unsafe levels within hours. Good food hygiene standards are vital to prevent these illnesses.

Most food poisoning occurs from eating contaminated food. Foods commonly involved with food poisoning are meat and poultry, shellfish, rice and dairy products. To find out more information please see our factsheet on Food Poisoning
