Kingston in Bloom 2006

2006 Winners

44 gardeners entered the competition this year in eight different categories:

  1. Best Front Garden
  2. Best Containers
  3. Best Education Establishment Display
  4. Blooming Pub’s, Restaurants and Café’s.
  5. Best Public buildings and Business Premises
  6. Best Community Space
  7. All Year Round Sustainable Garden
  8. One for the children

Entries were judged based on five key sustainable criteria:

  • Sustainability – Proportion of sustainable planting versus bedding plants. Plants raised from seed, use of mulches and organic pesticides (if at used at all)
  • Volume – assessment of too many/too few plants to enhance the space.
  • Maintenance – use of water saving devices, dead heading, regular weeding and hoeing
  • Containers – should support the plants throughout the season in terms of size and water retention qualities, use of non peat-based compost.
  • Innovation – unusual planting schemes, inclusion of vegetables and fruits with flowers and grasses.
