Market Place Gold zone update
10 November 2004
The Gold zone Market Place Environmental Improvements have been partially implemented. The bollards, bins planters, and planting have been installed. Delivery and installation is expected to take place in January 2005.
Market Place Gold zone Proposed Environmental Improvements Exhibition



A Gold Zone is an area of environmental excellence. Kingston Town Gold Zone was successfully launched in November 2003 when the market area was designated the towns’ first Gold Zone. This exhibition illustrates the ideas for environmental improvements in the
Kingston Town Gold Zone.
The Gold Zone. initiative aims to raise the quality of Kingston’s historic Market Place in the following ways:
By Cleaning Up
Pedestrianisation:
Experimental pedestrianisation to provide a safer pedestrian environment and improve traffic management.
- Maintenance: Improvements to the cleansing regime, combating litter and graffiti
By Brightening Up
Lighting:
New lighting columns
Environmental Improvements:
New street furniture including public seating and planters
By Speaking Up
- Engaging support and involvement from local business and residents. This exhibition outlines the Council’s proposals for Environmental Improvements to the Market Place including new street furniture and planters
Kingston Appoints Design Champion
Kingston has appointed a Design Champion for the Royal Borough to generate a commitment to providing the highest quality urban design in the Borough.
In response to Government guidance for a greater emphasis on quality in designing places for people, the Council’s Executive has appointed Councilor Vicki Harris to this new role for local authorities.
Kingston Old Town Conservation Area Appraisal
Government policy guidance, provided in ‘PPG15: Planning and the Historic Environment’ expresses the need for local authorities to assess the special interest, character and appearance of conservation areas, to assist in setting out planning policy and inform development control.
