
The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is an area that has developed over time and exerts specific styles and periods within its urban and suburban fabric. The Council has the specific duty to enhance the borough's rich built environment by portecting it's historic fabric whilst working with developers to achieve high quality contemporary development that complements its historic surroundings.
We aim to:
- Preserve and enhance the historic built environment and the local distinctiveness of the borough; and
- Ensure high quality development of public spaces and key developments borough wide.
Our Involvement
- Designating and managing Conservation Areas;
- Managing the Council's duties for Listed Buildings;
- Identifying potential Listed Buildings and submitting "Spot Listing" applications;
- Protecting and promoting all the historic built fabric by advising on the conservation elements of planning and other types of applications (e.g. appeals and enforcement of unauthorised development) in conjunction with the Development Control Team; and formulating Council policy for the historic environment. (In conjunction with the Planning Policy Team);
- promoting good conservation practice on Council managed land.
- Initiating and inputting into the design of public space improvement schemes;
- Promoting high quality contemporary design by advising on the design elements of planning and other types of applications (e.g. appeals and enforcement of unauthorised development) in conjunction with the Development Control Team; and formulating Council policy on urban design matters. (In conjunction with the Planning Policy Team).
- Working with developers on the design of schemes before the submission of a planning application to ensure good design is pursued from the outset.
- Promoting good urban design practice on Council managed land.
