How Can I Help my Child who has Special Educational Needs?

The Parent Centre has been set up by the Government for all parents who want to help their child or children to learn.

10 things it suggests:

  1. Give your child lots of praise and encouragement.
  2. Read to, and with, your child for at least 20 minutes a day.
  3. Encourage children to talk, even young children.
  4. Use your local library.
  5. Visit museums and galleries.  Entry is free to most of them.
  6. Watch television with your child and talk about what you have seen.
  7. Do "homework" with young children.  Schools won't mind if the family join in!
  8. Where possible, have a quiet place to do homework.
  9. Discuss homework with your child.  Practise helping without taking over!
  10. Try to help your child enjoy homework!

Your children will enjoy school more if they have had a good night’s sleep, they arrive at school on time and their attendance is regular.
