All schools in Kingston help children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The SEN co-ordinator (SENCO) has day-to-day responsibility.
Schools help most children when their difficulties are first identified. They keep a register of all children having extra help, known as ’School Action’ and write targets, usually known as Individual Education Plans (IEPs). When targets are not met and something different and extra becomes necessary, perhaps bringing in specialists from outside the school, the child’s name will move on the register to School Action Plus.
Giving more help to children with the greatest difficulty (School Action Plus) and less help as things improve (School Action) is sometimes called a ‘graduated response’.
Kingston schools use Provision Maps to show the range of help they provide and pupil targets or IEPs to show what difference the help is making.
