Since September 2006, all children under the age of 18 and who live in a London Borough and are in full time education are able to travel for free on London buses and trams. Your child will need to obtain an Oyster Photocard and applications for Oyster Photocards are available at main Post Offices or by contacting Transport for London. The Local Authority expects free bus and tram travel to be used by all pupils where the journey time is scheduled by Transport for London at 45 minutes or less for primary aged pupils and 75 minutes or less for secondary aged pupils.
The Local Authority may provide a travel card to enable your child to travel by train if they are of primary school age and attend their nearest suitable school which is over two miles and the schedule journey time is over 45 minutes. If your child attends secondary school the Local Authority may provide a travel card to enable your child to travel by train if their nearest suitable school is over 3 miles and the scheduled journey is over 75 minutes.
Free travel will be provided to pupils who are from low income families if they are attending one of three nearest schools between 2 and 6 miles away for secondary aged pupils and over 2 miles away for primary aged pupils. Free travel for pupils from low income families will be covered by free travel on buses and trams under the TfL scheme, unless the scheduled journey time exceeds either 45 minutes (primary aged pupil) and 75 minutes (secondary aged pupil) the Local Authority may provide a travel card to enable your child to travel by train.
Assistance will also be provided to pupils who are attending the nearest suitable school which was chosen on the grounds of religion or belief; this school can be up to 15 miles away.
