At all Key Stages, Kingston schools consistently achieve results well above the national average. These high standards make our schools extremely popular with parents inside and outside the Borough. As a result most schools are regularly over-subscribed.
Our 37 primary schools cater for children from the age of 3 to 11. This, combined with our nursery school and the Kingston Early Years Partnership, means all children can benefit from at least one year of nursery education before starting in Reception. Class sizes at Key Stage 1 are already 30 or below in all schools. This is now extended so that the smaller classes are maintained as they move through Key Stage 2.
All ten secondary schools have sixth forms and provide for the full 11-18 age range. We have 4 single sex schools, 2 mixed schools, 2 single sex Catholic schools and 2 grammar schools (entry to which is via selective testing).
There are also 3 special schools, which span the whole age-range, for children with moderate or severe learning difficulties or physical disabilities.
We also provide a wide range of support services for our schools and pupils. These include the Education Inspection and Advisory Service, Equality Support Services, Assessment and Support for Learning, the Educational Psychology Service and Social Inclusion.
As a multicultural borough, we are keen to promote the employment of under-represented groups in the workforce. We therefore particularly welcome applications from minority ethnic communities and people with disabilities.
All of this supports our declared aim - to create and maintain the best learning and leisure opportunities for all the people of Kingston. To achieve this for children and young people, we recognise that schools need a range of high quality support services, freedom to use the available funding as they see fit, and a responsive and supportive Local Authority. We seek to meet the needs of schools in all of these ways, working in close partnership with head teachers, governing bodies and the local teacher associations.
