About the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames
Kingston
upon Thames is an attractive Royal Borough in the South West of London. It is
bordered by the River Thames, the County of Surrey, and the London Boroughs of Richmond, Sutton and
Merton. The Borough has a long and rich history, and achieved royal status from the crowning of seven
Anglo-Saxon
kings here in the tenth century.
The Borough includes the
suburban areas of Surbiton, New Malden and Coombe, Tolworth, Chessington and Worcester Park. Its growing
population
currently numbers around 150,000 - but attracts an estimated quarter of a million shoppers every week.

- Kingston's
large and attractive shopping centre, the best in the South and West of London, also boasts a wide range
of cultural and entertainment attractions. This includes a new leisure and entertainment complex and
a new riverside
theatre.It offers the most attractive stretch of the River Thames in Greater London, along with the
extensive Royal Parks and Palace of Hampton Court, Bushy Park and Richmond Park. Other famous locations
in the area
include Kew Gardens, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club, Twickenham Rugby Ground and Epsom Downs.
- All
main roads and railway lines lead to Central London, with frequent train services
from Kingston and Surbiton to Waterloo (15 - 20 minutes away), and from other stations in the Borough.
- To
the south, the Surrey Hills and villages are just a short train, bus or
car ride away, with some of the most scenic wooded countryside in the South of England. The South Coast
is within easy reach for day trips.

College
(of Further Education) and the Borough's Adult Education facilities offer a wide range of part-time
and evening courses, from the academic to the recreational.
