The main responsibilities of the Education Welfare Service are:
All children of compulsory school age should receive a suitable education by regularly attending school or otherwise. If a child is registered at school, parents are responsible for ensuring that their child attends regularly.
The primary role of Education Welfare Officers is to promote regular school attendance through advising and liaising with families and schools. Where necessary, relevant legislation is enforced in both the Magistrates and Family proceedings Courts.
The Education Welfare Service also identifies and signposts children missing from education (CME), children receiving elect home education and those who may need professional support in order to maximise their access to education. As a lead agency supporting safeguarding children in education, the Education Welfare Service also works together with other agencies to ensure high standards of safeguarding training is delivered to school staff.
