Religious Education (RE) is a statutory requirement for all schools but it is not part of the National Curriculum.
It is the local authority which has the responsibility for devising the Syllabus used for RE in the maintained schools in its locality. The local authority is advised by a Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) which convenes an Agreed Syllabus Conference to review the Syllabus every five years.
The Syllabus was reviewed during 2005/06 and a revised Syllabus was launched in January 2007 for implementation from September. Each school has been sent a copy of the Revised Agreed Syllabus, together with CDs of KS 1&2 lesson plans or KS3 schemes of work.
