Self Evaluation in Religious Education

SACRE Religious Education Information Strategy

SACREs have a legal duty to report to the local authority on Religious Education. As part of their advisory role, SACREs might request information from schools about the standards, quality and provision for Religious Education.

The Kingston SACRE strategy for seeking information from schools is as follows:

  • SACRE will ask the Director of Learning and Children’s Services to send, jointly with the SACRE, a letter annually to headteachers, copied to heads of Religious Education or Religious Education coordinators, with a reminder of the recommendation to undertake an annual self evaluation of Religious Education at the school using, for example, the Royal Borough of Kingston Subject Leader’s Self Evaluation tool or the Self Evaluation Toolkit from the Association of RE Inspectors, Advisors and Consultants (AREIAC).

The letter will request that a copy of any completed self assessment is sent to the SACRE by the end of July each year to allow the SACRE to monitor:

  • That schools are complying with the statutory requirements for RE.
  • Whether there are any problems in schools in providing adequate support for Religious Education provision.
  • Whether there are any needs relating to RE provision in the borough which should be incorporated within the SACRE development plan for its own self evaluation.
  • An alternative to sending a copy of the completed self assessment would be to complete a short feedback form as attached.
  • All school responses will be considered and a summary of the findings reported to a following meeting of the SACRE; the summary will include a checklist of schools which have responded.
  • Any issues arising from the SACRE’s consideration of the schools’ feedback will be listed in the SACRE’s Annual Report which is sent to the QCA.
  • The SACRE will also consider whether there are any revisions/additions to its own Development Plan which need to be made in the light of the schools’ responses.
