Graded Examinations

Kingston Music and Arts Service (KMAS) offers pupils the opportunity to take graded music examinations, which can motivate pupils to achieve by working towards a set goal. The 'grades' are recognised as international benchmarks and are valued by teachers and institutions all over the world.

Associated Board Exams

We primarily offer exams through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Associated Board practical exams provide a progressive system of assessments beginning with the Prep Test and moving up through 8 grades to diplomas.

We also offer Grade 5 Music Theory exams through the Associated Board. Pupils who wish to take Grade 6 and above practical exams must first achieve Grade 5 Music Theory. See the Courses and Activities section for more details about our two-term Grade 5 Music Theory Course.

We offer three exam sessions that take place during the academic year, at the end of each term:

Winter
(usually takes place in December)

Spring
(usually takes place in April)

Summer
(usually takes place in July)

You may choose to enter for any one of the available exam sessions. For details about our exam dates and also the closing dates for entries to be received, see the Exam Dates page (link in the menu on the left).

Alternatively, you may wish to apply directly to the Associated Board to take an exam at one of their Exam Centres during the dates that they offer. Visit the Associated Board web site for more information.

If you are interested in entering for an Associated Board Exam, ask your tutor for details.

Other Exams

If you are interested in any other exam boards and syllabuses - for example Trinity Guildhall and Rockschool Exams, then visit their websites for more information (links below) and ask your tutor for advice.
