Childcare and Early Education

Chikd Care setting   

Kingston Adult Education offer a range of Childcare, Playwork and Teaching Assistant qualifications.  Detailed information on the content of courses can be found on the awarding body websites:

Courses in Childcare and Playwork are offered at level 1, 2 and 3 and are for those interested in employment in settings such as pre-schools, nurseries, crèches, afterschool /breakfast clubs and holiday play schemes, at assistant or supervisory levels.  These courses are held at the North Kingston Centre.

Courses for Teaching Assistants are offered at level 3 and there is an entry requirement of English and Maths at level 2 (GCSE’s grades A – C or Adult Literacy and Numeracy).  The courses are for those interested in employment as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant in schools.  These courses are held at the Hook Centre.

Child Care learners

All courses require learners to attend work placements for a minimum number of hours or to be already employed in a setting /school.

All learners are required to attend an interview for a short assessment and to receive information about courses, placements, CRB checks and eligibility for funding if applicable.

Funding may be available in certain circumstances.

  • Learners on active benefits in the work related activity group (job seekers allowance or employment support allowance)
  • Learners undertaking level 2 without a full level 2 qualification (5 x GCSEs grades A-C or equivalent)
  • Learners under 25 undertaking level 3 without a full level 3 qualification (2 x A levels or equivalent)
  • Learners any age undertaking a level 3 qualification who do not already have a full level 2 or full level 3
  • Employed learners on childcare or playwork courses may be eligible for bursaries from the Childcare Support Team which could cover at least 80% of the course costs
  • Apprenticeships may be available for employed learners which offer functional skills alongside the main qualification

If no concessions are available to learners courses can be paid for by instalments.
