Family Learning
What is Family Learning?
Family Learning is designed for adults and children of all ages and abilities. There are a range of workshops and courses available, from two hour workshops to courses lasting 12 weeks or more. They are currently being offered in schools, children’s centres, libraries and community centres within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
There are two main types of Family Learning:
Wider Family Learning
This informal programme offers an exciting range of activities for parents/carers and children to participate in together. Other family members are also welcome including grandparents, aunts, uncles, stepfamilies and foster families. Activities include: Arts and Crafts, Music, Cook & Eat, Computers, Spanish, Wall Climbing and Bottle Gardens.
Family Literacy, Language & Numeracy
These informative workshops and courses are offered to adults and children or for parents/carers attending without their children. Parents/carers are given the opportunity to find out about their child's learning and development in literacy or numeracy (including ICT) as well as boosting their own skills. Literacy, numeracy and ESOL qualifications are offered on the longer courses.
Family Learning Week
In 2010, Family Learning Week ran from 7th - 26th October as part of National Family Learning Festival. The event was supported by the Campaign for Learning. An estimated 550 adults and children took part in this year’s celebrations in Kingston.
Family Learning Week promotes the value and importance of the role that families can play in supporting learning. Fun, informal and intergenerational learning are all seen as ways to encourage people into learning, particularly those who may not already participate in any formal learning activities. The activities and events can be delivered almost anywhere including schools, libraries, museums, leisure centres and shopping centres. This year’s theme was ‘Be Brilliant’ and both adults and children were encouraged to explore new skills and experiences together. A number of key events were held starting with the launch in Memorial Gardens, also Kingston Library and Museum, and continuing with workshops in schools and children’s centres.
