Every person wishing to marry in the UK has to prove their nationality before giving their notice of marriage.
If you are subject to immigration control you may need to produce additional documents from the Home Office before you are allowed to get married. To find out more:
If you are not subject to immigration control and you wish to get married in a register office, an approved premise or in a church other than the Church of England, both you and your partner must give separate notices of your intention to marry to the Superintendent Registrar for the districts in which you have lived for the seven days immediately before giving your notices.
The notices of marriage are legal requirement and must be given by the bride and groom in person.
You must know the name of the venue where you are getting married when you give your notice of marriage.

This will then be displayed for 15 clear days on a notice board in the Register Office, which the general public are allowed to see.

One Plus One's website "Married or Not" provides at-a-glance information on the legal differences between married and unmarried couples, along with direct links to additional sources of information and help to download, and a directory of organisations providing expert advice. It was created as part of the Government-backed campaign, Living Together, to dispel the common law marriage myth and to better inform cohabiting couples in England and Wales of their legal rights.
