What To Do In The Event Of An Emergency

If you find yourself in the middle of an emergency it is important to:

  • make sure 999 has been called if people are injured or if there is a threat to life
  • not put yourself or others in danger
  • follow the advice of the emergency services
  • try to remain calm and think before acting, and try to reassure others

In the case of most major emergencies, the safest place to be is indoors. Simple advice to follow is to: go inside, stay inside, and tune into local radio for advice and information.

Your local radio stations are:

  • Radio Jackie 107.8
  • BBC London Live 94.9 FM
  • Capital FM 95.8 FM
  • Capital Gold 1548 AM
  • LBC 1152 AM
  • Magic FM 105.4 FM

During an emergency, you may want to visit this BBC website for links to lots of websites that provide useful information that may assist you in preparing for and dealing with an emergency situation, such as the Met Office, Fire Safety and Transport for London.

If you are asked to leave your home by the emergency services, leave as quickly and calmly as possible.

If you have time:

  • Turn off electricity, gas and water supplies, unplug electrical appliances and lock all doors and windows
  • Check the items listed above for what to take with you

When you are told that it is safe to return home, open windows to provide fresh air before reconnecting gas, electricity and water supplies. Only return home when you are told it is safe to do so.
