Disability Crime

Safer Kingston Partnership

We are currently revising this page to provide further information on the subject.

Crimes Against Disabled People

A disablist incident is any incident that is perceived (by the victim or any other person) to be aimed at a person because of their disability or impairment.  There are a variety of ways in which an incident could be classified as a disablist crime:

  • If an offender assaults a person believing that person to have a disability, then this type of incident would be classed as a disability hate crime.
  • Criminal Damage is committed to home of a disabled person.  If the disabled person believes the damaged was committed because of their disability (whether this can be proved or not), then this incident would be classed as a disablist crime.
  • If an investigating officer believes that due to the location or nature of the crime that the crime is a disablist incident then that crime would be recorded as such.

The Safer Kingston Partnership works with a  number of partners across Kingston upon Thames to support vulnerable individuals with physical, sensory, learning and mental health issues who are targets of crime based on their disability.   Kingston Council offer a wide range of services for disabled people.  See the end of this page for a link to the Kingston Council's website pages with information for disabled people.
