Child Poverty

Tackling child poverty is important to everyone concerned with improving outcomes for children in Kingston.  The Child Poverty Act came into force in March 2010, placing new duties on Local Authorities and their 'delivery partners' to cooperate in the bid to reduce and mitigate the effects of child poverty.

Latest Government statistics state that 4,930 children were living in poverty in Kingston in August 2008.

We recognise the importance of tackling child poverty as it can lead to inequality of opportunity, hardship, deprivation and exclusion.

The  legislation required Kingston to develop and produce a Child Poverty Strategy.  This was published in July 2011.  The Child Poverty Strategy is informed by a local child poverty needs assessment.  The strategy aims to take 1,000 children out of poverty by 2014.  The action plan for 2011-14 is now being developed.

A wide range of partners, parents, children and young people were consulted in order to develop the evidence base, strategy and action plan.  They represent some of the key areas in tackling child poverty:  Family Support and Extended Services, Mental Health Services, Job Centre Plus, Citizens Advice Bureau, Voluntary and Community Sector, Youth Services, Health, Housing, Schools, Children's Centre, Early Intervention, Adult Education, Integrated Disabled Children's Team, 14-19 and Adult Services.

We will update you regularly on our website  with links to documents showing the progress we are making in tackling Child Poverty in Kingston.
