Purchase of the Exclusive Right of Burial

The fee quoted on the deed, detailed on your Funeral Directors account is for the purchase of the Exclusive Right of Burial within the grave and the right to erect a memorial in accordance with the Councils Regulations. Please note that you have not purchased the land and that your written permission will be required for any future burial including scattering of cremated remains and memorial placement.

We operate an open door policy and you may contact/visit us at any time to inspect all records relating to your purchase and to discuss memorial options.

Copies of the Council Regulations are available on request. Please be aware that as in your own circumstances adjacent graves may need to be opened which may preclude access to your grave for a short period of time.

Graves within a traditional burial area may take the form of a monument to a maximum height of 5’ including the base with kerbs surrounds if appropriate or kerbs only within which you may place decorative Chipping’s, slabs or maintain as a garden. To lessen the risk of subsidence of memorials it is advisable not to erect a memorial until at least 6 months has elapsed. Over the months to follow the grave will be allowed to settle naturally and our ground staff will add topsoil as necessary.

Graves within a lawn burial area may take the form of headstones up to a maximum height of 3’ including the base, which can then be immediately erected on the concrete bearers provided at the head of the grave. For safety reasons please do not plant out the grave or place fencing, stone edgings, glass/pottery jars or vases as such articles both impede maintenance and access to other graves. After a period of settlement the grave will be turfed or seeded and mowed regularly throughout the summer.

May we suggest that you consider carefully the type and design of the memorial and seek several quotations before placing an order and ensure that your chosen mason can conduct all works in accordance with the current best practise as advised by the National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM). To assist we can provide a list of local memorial masons.

Please note that the grave owner is responsible for memorial safety and all necessary repairs including vandalism. However, if it is proven that damage has occurred as a result of our work operations then we will be responsible for repair works. It is advised that you consider taking out insurance to cover the cost of your memorial for peace of mind.
